
Steps toward a sustainable seaweed industry

According to a 2018 Markets and Markets report, the commercial seaweed industry is expected to reach $21 billion in revenues and grow at a compounded rate of 8.4% by 2023 due to seaweed’s functional properties in food processing and a growth in demand for a wider-array of seaweed-based products.
Carrageenan, a frequent food ingredient that is extracted from red seaweed and used for its stabilizing, texturizing, gelling, and thickening properties, is responsible for a projected $1 billion of this total. For most, carrageenan goes undetected in numerous foods and beverages they consume and the personal products they use.
