The protection of the marine environment through the designation of well-managed MPAs would serve not only to restore marine ecosystems and enhance sustainable fishing, but, since 205 megatonnes of carbon are estimated to be stored in UK offshore shelf sediments (Luisetti et al., 2019), it will also equip us with a valuable tool for combating climate change.
