The United States Federal Strategy for Addressing the Global Issue of Marine Litter

Marine litter, legally defined as “marine debris” , describes man-made solid materials that have been intentionally or accidentally released by humans into inland water bodies, near or on the shore, and in the open ocean. In one year an average of eight million tons of marine plastic litter ended up in oceans across the world due to poor management of solid waste, insufficient infrastructure, littering, and dumping.
