Blue finance MPA investment facility is an impact investment opportunity, in a portfolio of Marine Protected Areas, designed to enhance coral reef resilience and the livelihoods of coastal communities.
BF recently closed their second deal in Belize for a US$1.2 million blended finance facility with investors such as Mirova Natural Capital (Natixis group) and IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) for one of the largest MPAs in the Caribbean. Projected positive impacts include 130,000 ha of coral reefs and mangroves, revenue benefits for 1000+ fisher households and blue carbon sequestration. Revenue models, aligned with conservation and science are based on sustainable nature-based tourism, blue carbon credits and responsible aquaculture.

Blue finance is a social enterprise that acts as a project developer and is directly involved in “on the ground” activities, with the day-to-day management of the MPA projects allocated to established (and well-embedded) local partners and communities. We are one of the only teams with experience in developing and executing bankable MPA projects in developing countries.
- The first 4 MPA deals are already structured, and investment is near-closed.
- The approach is being upscaled, with preparatory work underway in 10 additional MPAs.
