Welcome to our November Newsletter.
COP 27 in full swing in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt - A “blue thread” visible.
Blue thread is the metaphor The High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel) used to connect
10 ocean activities at the COP.
We’ve developed the same impression of an increased ocean presence after speaking with a number of people who have been at it a long time. It’s hard to keep track of the wave of
events, announcements and commitments, so here are two more helpful resources:
A sampling of ocean news and releases from COP27:
The Ocean Pavilion - An exciting first - the ocean is
the singular focus of a Pavilion inside the central “Blue Zone.”
First-of-its-kind “
High-Quality Blue Carbon Principles and Guidance
” announced by a powerful consortium of ocean leaders to accelerate the standardization of this vital market.
New report -
What Ocean Sustainability Means for Business - from
the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) outlines positive change and growth in the blue economy made possible by businesses acting in concert
with the G20.
Our friend Torsten Thiele brought this excellent policy brief from Climate Champions,
Defining the Blue Journey Loop for the Sustainable Future We Need
to our attention as COP27 kicked off - compelling reading with additional article links.
October on the road
This past month we participated in a number of exciting ocean conferences. On October 4th we spoke on the Keynote Panel: Innovation Alliance at the Economist’s
World Ocean Tech & Innovation Summit, in Halifax, Canada. While there, we also
engaged with a talented cohort of ocean entrepreneurs as a Mentor/Associate in the most recent
Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) - Oceans Session.
Later in the month we were delighted to chair the closing Plenary Session at the World Ocean Council’s
BlueFIN 2022 Conference
, entitled “The BlueFIN High-Level Panel Across the Finance Sectors”. We stayed the following day for Oceanovation’s inaugural
Meetup x Barcelona - congratulations to Rick Wall and team on creating an
impactful event.
Finally, towards the end of the month we served as a delegate for Ocean Exchange’s 11th annual competition in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. You can learn about the impressive winners
and the Ocean Exchange ecosystem here.
Our first curated book list …
The night before the CDL event we gave a brief talk about why we’re such fans of books. We like
Steven Kotler’s analysis of the Return On
Investment (ROI) of different types of reading, which compares the “effort” of the author to estimated reading time. After dinner 31 guests voted in secret for a “cool ocean book”,
resulting in 30 different selections. Click here to see
which sole title got more than one vote as well as the full list of CDL-Oceans community picks.
Our first holiday gift idea …
Explorers of the Deep, a game designed by Rutgers University, focuses on the mysteries and adventures of ocean exploration - with robots. Young people ages 8-13 learn how to use
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to explore the earth’s oceans and how it relates to life on the planet. The game consists of three activities: the Ocean Robot
Test Tank, the Ocean Communicator and the Ocean Expedition board game.
