Welcome to our October Newsletter!

Climate Week NYC Brings the Blue:

Climate Week NYC was bigger than ever, with over 900 events covering a broad spectrum of topics. We’re happy to report the oceans seemed to reach new levels of engagement and integration into mainstream climate dialogues. While it’s a daunting task to capture the overall shape of the week, here’s a thoughtful take on some of the broad themes by the World Economic Forum’s Gill Einhorn.

Investable Oceans participated in and co-hosted numerous events, beginning with a Lofoten Hope Initiative-inspired event at The Explorers Club with Sylvia Earle, Johan Rockström and Keith Tuffley (live from his Arctic expedition). Ted also attended two days of board and member meetings with ORRAA (Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance) as Karen Sack and her extraordinary team celebrated their five year anniversary and reported on their impressive progress towards their goals of activating at least USD$500 million of investment to build finance and insurance products and enhancing the resilience of 250 million coastal residents in the Global South. We also enjoyed our “seaside chat” with Seaworthy Collective’s Tamara Kahn as part of the Blue Tech Startupsphere hosted by several members and friends of 1000 Ocean Startups.

We appreciate so many organizations including us in their plans for this important week and are already looking forward to Climate Week NYC 2025!

Our Latest Investor Gathering: Exploring Teal, and Two Innovative Companies:

During Climate Week we also hosted one of our investor “gatherings” that featured two companies making a difference for the climate. One of the companies is a “car wash for ships” that reduces Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and tackles the global biofouling problem, and the other provides a more sustainable way to feed fish in aquaculture using insect protein that helps take pressure off our global fisheries. If you’re an accredited investor and would like to sign up for upcoming gatherings please visit us here.

In addition, we previewed an upcoming research piece we’re co-authoring with ARPA-E, in which we analyze the paths by which climate tech and cleantech VCs are crossing over from green to blue investing – creating a new category of “teal.” By analyzing these pathways and journeys, we hope to provide insight into what’s behind this promising development, as well as explore what we can collectively do to accelerate this trend. Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks.

Marine CDR – A Potential Game Changer, But a Steep Climb Ahead:

On Friday of Climate Week, Investable Oceans and MITRE co-hosted a multidisciplinary group of experts from scientific institutions, NGOs, government and finance to evaluate the current state and future prospects of mCDR (Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal). Our session brought together a number of people and organizations who had hosted events earlier in the week, including Ocean Visions, the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, Carbon to Sea Initiative and [C]Worthy – with the goal of fostering collaboration rather than duplicating the tremendous efforts of others. We’ll be following up on the lively conversation we had, so stay tuned in the coming weeks. Also, please feel free to look us up if this is a topic of interest to you.

A Full Slate of Events Coming Up, Hope to See You Soon!:

With Climate Week in the rearview mirror, we’re looking ahead to an impressive array of conferences between now and the end of the year. We’ve highlighted six of them below – we plan on participating in most, if not all of them, including Helena being on the ground in Baku managing the Ocean Pavilion for the duration of COP29. So if you plan on attending any of these events, please let us know.

As always, we thank you for your support!
